Please read Copyright, Acceptable Use, and Restrictions Regarding CSLP Art/Graphics and the CSLP Manual/CD (pdf document 14 KB). Frequently Asked Questions
What is the Collaborative Summer Library Program and how does it operate in California? The California State Library (CSL) in cooperation with the California Library Association (CLA) has joined the Collaborative Summer Library Program (CSLP), and has paid 2006 membership for all California Public Libraries. CSLP is a grassroots organization of 32 states working together to bring reading programs to communities at the lowest cost possible for public libraries. By combining resources and working with a commercial vendor to produce materials designed exclusively for CSLP members, public libraries in participating states, or systems can purchase posters, reading logs, bookmarks, certificates and a variety of reading incentive products at significant savings. Who orders the materials I want for my library? All California public libraries will receive manuals for the 2006 summer program, which includes a CD-ROM with graphics that can be customized by individual libraries. Libraries will pay for and place their own orders for other promotional materials and incentives. Items ordered will be shipped directly to individual locations. What is the 2006 Theme? The children's theme is "Paws, Claws, Scales & Tales." The artist for this year's program is California children's book illustrator David Shannon. A separate Young Adult's programming manual suitable for grades 6 and above is also included. Artwork is by California illustrator Russell Walks for the young adult theme titled "Creature Features." When will libraries get their materials?Manuals with an accompanying artwork CD are now shipping to libraries nationwide and should arrive at each of California's Library Regions by mid-October. Manuals will then be routed to the member libraries and their branches. Libraries will also receive a 12 page full color order form for summer reading materials from the Highsmith/Upstart Company, the contracted vendor for CSLP. You may also order Online. What are the deadlines for ordering promotional products? The deadline for the initial order of supplemental materials from Upstart/Highsmith will be November 19, 2005. Materials ordered from Upstart/Highsmith before this date will be shipped in March 1, 2006. A second deadline is January 1, 2005. Orders received by the second date will be shipped by April 1, 2006. Orders received after January 1, 2006 will be shipped after May 1, 2006. You may reorder extras later as long as supplies last. UPSTART has an excellent Customer Service Staff to assist you in you ordering. You may pay by credit card, check or Purchase Order. What kind of artwork do we get with the program?Clip art is available in color as well as black and white line art on the CD-ROM in an assortment of file formats. The CD is included inside the 2006 manual. Black and white clip art is available in the manual for photocopying. There are also reproducible forms and handouts included in the CD-ROM. The manual is included on the CD in PDF Format. Artwork may be used on your library's Web site, Newsletters, Program Announcements bookmarks, newspaper ads, programming flyers, etc. May I use the artwork to make t-shirts or other products to sell to patrons or to libraries within my region? No. The artwork is copyrighted and is the property of Highsmith for use only with the 2005 California Reading Program theme. You may not give the CD to another product vendor for use on products for sale or use the CD artwork yourself to produce a product that is being sold by Highsmith such as T-shirts, bookbags, or posters see the Highsmith catalog and also review Copyright, Acceptable Use, and Restrictions Regarding CSLP Art/Graphics and the CSLP Manual/CD (pdf document 14 KB). Questions on the use of artwork should be directed to Stephanie Stokes or CLA. Are there any exceptions?Yes, one. You may create your own Reading Logs. If you need to create another product you may use the slogans but not the artwork. CSLP does not copyright the slogan or the theme. UPSTART does copyright the artwork. Therefore you would need to use another font for the slogan letters and some other artist's artwork. What kinds of Promotional Products and Incentives are offered?See the Online Order Form. Color brochures will be sent along with the manuals. Can UPSTART customize posters and bookmarks?Yes, when you order 250 or more of a single item. Details to come on bulk printing information. Check out the order form and you will notice an area at the bottom of the posters set aside for this purpose. Bookmarks may be order in "press sheets" for printing on the reverse side. Are other languages available? At this time Children's and Young Adult's posters and bookmarks are offered in Spanish. The manual also offers pintables, booklists and other resources in Spanish. Can we get samples of materials from past years?Several libraries in California participated in the 2004 theme and even more used the 2005 theme. Check with your regional system as they may be able to connect you with a library in your system with leftovers they can share for your review. Do I need to submit reports? If you receive summer reading materials for your library, the California State Library would like to have some feedback. Shortly we will inform you of the record keeping requirements. How can I get more information?Contact Stephanie Stokes at 818-980-7476, Sue Negreen CLA Executive Director at 916-447-8541 or use the Contact form.
